WHY ARE PEOPLE HOMELESS?

Lack of affordable housing in Martin and St. Lucie Counties, is a critical problem. Although home sales were making records on the Treasure Coast in 2002-2006, in 2007-2008, so too are the foreclosures, both factors are increasing the number of homeless people.

Affordable housing is basically non-existent on the Treasure Coast even for those in the middle-class, many are losing their homes and forced to live in sub-standard housing, or hotels which allow per-day rates.

IS THE ANSWER AN AFFORDABLE LIVING WAGE? YOU BE THE JUDGE.
A single person making $10.00 per hour working full-time cannot afford a one bedroom apartment on the Treasure Coast, two fulltime jobs would be required to afford current market rent rates .This problem forces families and friends to live in overcrowded and sub-standard housing
The Lack of Affordable Housing Stock in America is a huge problem and is a major factor in homelessness.
In Martin and St. Lucie Counties, a new population from the middle class is also falling into this current homeless situation, the majority consisting of displaced homemakers. The homeless condition continues to worsen as affordable housing is near non-existent for lower income individuals or families.
